Timber flooring questions

What is the difference between engineered and solid timber flooring?

Engineered timber has a real wood surface over supporting layers. Solid timber boards are made from a single piece of wood. Compare the individual product's construction, surface finish, maintenance needs and approved installation method before choosing. Laminate and hybrid flooring can reproduce a timber look but are different materials.

How much does timber flooring supply and installation cost in Canberra?

The total depends on the selected flooring, measured area, installation pattern and condition of the existing floor. Ask for an itemised quotation covering materials, installation, floor preparation, removal and trims where needed. Flooring prices shown are per m² and supply only. A minimum $350 flooring transport charge applies to every order for ACT and surrounding areas; installation is quoted separately.

Can timber flooring be installed over existing tiles?

Suitability depends on the selected product and an assessment of the tiled surface, moisture conditions, floor levels and door clearances. Tiles must meet the flooring manufacturer's requirements for a sound, dry and suitably flat subfloor. Grinding, levelling, removal or another preparation method may be required.

What is the difference between herringbone and chevron flooring?

Herringbone uses rectangular boards arranged in a staggered zigzag. Chevron uses angled board ends that meet to form a continuous V. Check the actual product pattern and installation requirements; a timber-look herringbone hybrid is not the same product as real engineered timber.

Which timber flooring suits homes with children or pets?

Compare the wood species, finish, surface texture and manufacturer's care advice. No timber floor is scratch-proof. Furniture pads, suitable entrance mats and prompt spill cleaning help protect the surface; ask about the specific product's suitability for your household.

Can engineered timber be used with underfloor heating?

Only choose a flooring and heating combination specifically approved by the flooring manufacturer. Confirm the heating system, subfloor moisture limits, temperature limits and installation instructions before ordering.

Can engineered timber flooring be sanded later?

It depends on the thickness and condition of the real wood surface, the board construction and the manufacturer's instructions. Do not assume every engineered floor can be sanded; confirm the selected product's limits before purchase.
